1. The Mullet
We can all thank Beyonce for bringing back this 80’s hair trend. The hair is cut so it is shorter on the sides with lots of texture, while still being longer in the back. Generally a symbol of rebellion, the mullet haircut is set to return to be a hot trend for summer 2024.
You'll see more modern takes on this trend with the sides of the mullet a bit more feathered, giving it a natural, less "in-your-face" shape.
If you want a more natural, easy-to-grow out mullet, you can pair it with other common cuts, such as curtain bangs or the shag haircut. Toning down this mullet style will allow the hair to grow out naturally, all while keeping it a little less edgy, without fully committing to the style.
See this haircut on Miley Cyrus, Kristen Steward and Lil Nas X.
2. The Angled, Asymmetric and Blunt Bob
Thinking of cutting your hair off for the warmer summer months? If you are, there are new hairstyles emerging as this years’ top trends. Add some body and volume to your short hair with a little mousse. There are also different ways to cut the bob.
Ask your stylist to cut your bob so the front pieces are longer in the front, known as the angled bob. Or, ask your hairdresser for an asymmetric bob, which is when the hair is cut at an angle only on one side of the head.
If these styles arn’t for you, but you still like the look of shorter hair, you can ask for a standard bob. The bob is known as a blunt cut all the way across the head, just below the ears. If you want your hair cut a little longer, you can ask for a “lob” or a “long bob”, and then show your hairdresser how long you would like the hair cut.
3. Shag Haircut
The shag haircut is reminiscent of the mullet, but with lots of cascading length. It's been deemed "the modern mullet" for those that want a way to try out a edgier style without fully committing.
This style features choppy, feathery hair, and as a bonus, it doesn’t take too long to style. You’ll see lots of differences in length with this style, as it can be a longer cut or turned into a shag bob by cutting it shorter.
This haircut is a way to break away from a general "pretty-girl" haircut. It's fearless while being effortless and easy to style.
The shag haircut is also great for a variety of hair textures. Give pin-straight hair texture through this haircut, or lean into your natural curls by giving them some structor.
4. Curtain Bangs
These face-framing cascading layers will shape your face while also giving you the option to pin the bangs back out of your face.
The shaggy, face-framing bangs are easy to wear with your hair up or down. Generally cut with a middle part, the bangs start shorter in the center and get longer towards the perimeter of the face.
Curtain bangs can be worn across a variety of textures and styles. See them styled with messy waves, curly shags and pin-straight bobs.
Seen on celebs such as Gigi Hadid, Sabrina Carpenter and Jennifer Lopez.
The biggest plus? This is a low-commitment style. If you decide you don’t like these bangs, it’s easy to grow them out gracefully.
5. Feathered Layers
Look for feathered layers this summer, an effortless cut that easily goes from the beach to the newest chic outdoor restaurant.
This 70’s style was made popular by Farrah Fawcett, known for long layers around the face. Make the cut more modern by blowing the layers inward instead of outward. Achieve this look by working with a stylist, and discuss where the shortest layers should start - either at the cheekbone, chin or collarbone.
